Understanding the Empty Tomb

Series: Preacher: Date: April 21, 2019 Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 15:12-22

12 – If it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?  13 – If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 – And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so […]

Why Communion?

Series: Preacher: Date: January 27, 2019 Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 11:23-29

With the big snow of a couple weeks ago that caused us to cancel services and our Puerto Rico Mission Trip Share Service last week—I feel the need to remind you that we just started our year-long focus on neighboring—with sermons designed to prepare ourselves to answer questions about our faith—the questions raised by our […]

When He Conquered Death

Series: Preacher: Date: April 1, 2018 Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 15:14-15, 17-19

I was thinking—if we took a poll in which we ranked holidays Christmas would come first—with Easter a very distant second. I say this for several reasons. First, far more countries and cultures celebrate Christmas than do Easter. And—here in the U.S. the Christmas holiday is MUCH more popular than the one we observe today. […]

“He is no fool…”

Series: Preacher: Date: April 1, 2018, Easter Sunrise Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 1:18-31

The power of the words, “He is risen,” does not come from some congruence with normal life experience; the power is found in the absurdity of the statement combined with the realization that it is, in fact, true.  We’ve come here today to give witness to the fact of the resurrection, but we dare not stop there. We aren’t here because of an airtight argument but because of the life-giving breath of the Holy Spirit in us.  He brings our dead hearts back to life through the shed blood of Jesus, and only then can that blood be pumped to our brains to bring true understanding.

Series: Preacher: Date: December 3, 2017 Scripture Reference: John 13:34-35; 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

John 13:14 –  A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  35 – By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another. 1st Corinthians 9:19 – Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to […]

1 – Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 – By this gospel you are saved,if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 – For what I […]

The Significance of the Supper

Series: Preacher: Date: March 20, 2017 Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Introduction Who has ever walked the National Mall in Washington, D. C. to look at our national monuments?  If this week’s snow hasn’t affected the blossoms, thousands will be viewing those monuments this week as they enjoy the beauty of the Cherry Blossom Festival.  Those cherry trees began from a gift from Japan in 1912 […]

Money Matters

Series: Preacher: Date: November 6, 2016 Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 16

I love the TOY STORY movies!  Don’t you?! The animation is great. So is the cast! I mean with actors like Tim Allen and Tom Hanks you can’t go wrong. The writing is wonderful—I love all the jokes that only adults will get! But the thing that really moves me about these films—is the way […]

Body Lift

Series: Preacher: Date: October 30, 2016 Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 15:35-58

Sue and I used to watch a show on HGTV called “Rick’s Restorations.” Are there any “Rick fans” present? For those of you who haven’t seen it, in the show Rick and his crew would take old things—beat up things—rusty things—and make them look brand new. Here’s some before and after examples: Look at the […]

It All Comes Down to This

Series: Preacher: Date: October 23, 2016 Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 15;1-22

When I was in high school I LOVED geometry—which is surprising because I had struggled with Trigonometry and Algebra—but with geometry everything just fell into place. I got an A—applause please! One of the reasons I did well was because I had an excellent teacher—but another factor was that to me at least—geometry made SENSE. […]
